This Wednesday, the president of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, referred to the discussions surrounding the possible ban on bullfighting in the Mexican capital, which are taking place in the Commission on Constitutional Points and Citizen Initiative. Initially scheduled for Tuesday, the discussion was postponed until Friday, March 14, with a vote planned in the Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday, March 18, if it occurs.
During a morning press conference, Sheinbaum did not give a direct answer as to whether she supported the ban on this practice, but expressed her wish for a resolution that guarantees the integrity of the bulls involved. She mentioned that schemes from other parts of the world are being considered, where cultural activities are maintained without violence towards animals.
In this regard, she highlighted the importance of avoiding the death of bulls and recalled that the Constitution already includes the prohibition of animal mistreatment. Sheinbaum acknowledged the cultural prominence of bullfighting in the country and indicated her willingness to explore schemes that allow for the breeding of bulls, as it is a productive activity for many people, as long as mistreatment is avoided.
